OLYMPIC sporting spirit – Honeykome helps Boks to viral victory

Somewhere in Cape Town, hours before the Olympics kicked off – Showing their support for South Africa’s Olympians, Springbok rugby players filmed a message that has caught not only the imagination of the team, but of the entire nation. The hilarious video – produced by digital agency HoneyKome’s video division, VideoSwarm – shows Trevor Nyakane attempting artistic gymnastics, Lood de Jager tackling table tennis, Coenie Oosthuizen giving Usain Bolt a run for his money and even Damian de Allende trying his hand at shot putting.

As part of SARU’s #LoveRugby campaign, the visual entertainment has already racked up hundreds of thousands of views, making it one of the most watched video on the Springbok Facebook page to date.

But making the epic was no walk in the park. Shot within a space of about three hours, at two different athletics stadia in Stellenbosch, with Gord Laws (Executive Creative Director) and his small team of videographers rushing between locations, and with little prior warning of who was available, the VideoSwarm team prepared, coached, directed and filmed everything ad hoc, on the spot. With the opening ceremony looming, the team worked throughout the weekend to edit and perfect the final version (complete with CGI special effects), delivering the end-cut to the South African Rugby Union (SARU), ahead of their deadline and ready to share the #LoveRugby message with TEAM SA in Rio.

By Wednesday afternoon, the video that has now ‘gone viral’, had been viewed 373 000 times on the SARU Facebook page, 80 296 times on YouTube, had ranked on Twitter and has been shared countless times since.  Desere’ Orrill, Managing Director of HoneyKome is ultra proud of the team that made this production possible: Gord Laws, Jacob Claassen, Ryan Jonathan, Rugaya Jacobs and John Parr plus the other team members holding down the fort behind the scenes.  “This video – the spirit in which it was created, filmed and participated in – is indicative of the unifying spirit that sport can have across the country, especially when it is combined with the lighter side of life.”

ECS Gord Laws summed it up by saying:  “It was great fun working with a spontaneous talented crew and with the Boks, who really went all out to show their support for their sporting compatriots.”
